Five New Realities for the New Year

Dave Pell

--

  1. All the hopes and dreams that quite recently seemed entirely attainable are now so wildly out of reach that they’re laughable.
  2. It may have come as a bit of a surprise, but everything you believed to be true is actually false. And in an interesting twist, all the fake stuff is real (except the Facebook posts in which it looks like you and your family are happy — those are still fake.)
  3. In regard to the institutions you felt sure would uphold the values you believed to be immutable — two key factors have changed. First, the institutions have crumbled. Second, the values are no longer valued.
  4. The communication tools that you hoped would further democratize society and create common bonds actually segregated us like never before, broke the bonds that we had, and led to an autocrat taking power. (Related: That personal brand you’ve dedicated years to developing basically went up in smoke.)
  5. Someday, you’ll look back on all this and laugh. Assuming you survive.
